Today was our only non-cruise ship excursion. We booked the train and bus trip through Chilkoot Charters. We originally wanted to do the longer 7 hour tour, but were not in port long enough. Instead we did the train ride up with the van ride back. Some people added on gold panning, but it seemed to contrived for us.

We got up early and were off the ship by 7am. It was quite a long walk to the meeting point outside the security gates. There were shuttles available for passengers that couldn't make the walk. We were driven to the train depot (you can walk if you are doing it on your own) and our group was placed in the last train car. It was reserved for all those that were on a chilkoot charter tour. If you ask them which is the better side to sit on they will say that the train company doesn't want them saying. But if they were to get on the train they would sit on the left side. If you are going northbound....SIT ON THE LEFT!!! Left is the left side when facing forward. Port side if the train were a ship.
When you get on board there will be a train magazine (3 or 4 pages) on your seat. It will have a map of where you are headed and how far the notable points are from each other. As you travel the conductor or some other appointee will tell you as you approach these sites. There are also guides that walk through the train and can answer questions and sell you a cd/hat. The ride up took about 2 or 2.5 hours, not really sure. We started out in greenery and as we climbed we got to total snow. It was very foggy and it felt like we were in the clouds at parts. Along the ride they tell you historical stories about the gold rush trek. Very interesting stuff.
On the bus/van ride back we made a stop at the welcome to alaska sign and had the option of being dropped off at the ship or downtown. We opted for downtown so we could see the red onion saloon. We didn't spend much time shopping here as we were shopped out. Most ports are selling the same Alaska goodies so we had seen the stuff before. We were also cold as we didn't layer as much as we usually do.
We stopped in the saloon for a beer (sit at the bar its faster) They sell a tour of the upstairs $5 for 15 minutes (just like the old days). After a drink we headed back to the ship. At this point it was about 2pm and we had to be back on at 3:30.
Instead of an afternoon of trivia like we usually do, we put on bathing suits and headed to the hot tub in the solarium. We spent some time in there and the peaceful solarium lulled us to sleep.

We got ready for dinner a little early tonight as it was formal night and we wanted to take pictures. We spent a few minutes and peaked in on the show (piano player) tried a few songs of name that tune trivia (50s and 60s tongiht) and then waited on line for pictures and watched the if you know it dance it game show.

Dinner tonight was lobster night. Jason had soup (broccoli?), fishermans plate . Lindsay had a cesar salad and a fishermans plate. Ivoan offered us more lobster but one was enough for us. We shared the trio dessert and headed off to quest!!
I will not spoil quest for those that have not been on a royal cruise before however, i will say this....the elderly lady standing next to me decided to participate in the teeth portion of the game. Meaning, as I stood next to her, she pulled out her false teeth and put them in a strangers hand. I want to barf while writing this. More power to her.
After quest we went up to the midnight buffet to take a look at the carvings and then went to the solarium to read our books and play some skip bo. The ship was rocking a little bit tongiht and that would be the theme for the rest of the cruise (except while at the glacier).
Tip of the day: Sit on the left!!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287152329461311763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2714882880572002824.post-39962681771588375552012-06-10T18:53:00.004-07:002012-06-10T19:07:53.752-07:00Day 5: Juneau

This morning we had room service delivered because it was
going to be a very long day in por.t Yet, again everything came perfect as
ordered. After a quick breakfast we decided to get off the ship early to go to
Mt Roberts tram and hike the trails at the top of the peak. We had done our
research and were told a lot of wildlife
could be seen from this area so we were planning on spending a few hours up there.
As we were about to purchasre the tickets we asked the guy at the counter how
long of a trail it was and that’s when we found out we wouldn’t be going up Mt Roberts
tram. Apparently the trails were still covered with snow and were not open to
the public this early in the season. He told us we could still ride the tram
and there was a restaurant and gift shop at the top that we could see. Well,
for 30 dollars a person to ride up it didn’t seem worth it. Especially since we
were going on a helicopter in a few hours. So, plans changed.

We decided to walk around town so we quickly stopped back on
the ship to grab some extra layers and walked down south franklin street. We
stopped in a bunch of shops and started souvenier shopping. (again get the
coupon book in Vancouver!) The shops were willing to bargan with you over
prices. In a matter of 10 minutes we got one shop clerk almost 50% of his
original price on a necklace, he was going to throw the chain in for free. We
went to a second store and saw an almost identical piece only a few karats bigger,
and was able to pit them against each other to get the price down. Ultimately
we opted to not get the piece of jewelry- but its good to know they will
negotiate with you. We kept walking to the left and ended up at the Alaska State capitol building as well as the governors mansion. We took some photos and headed back to town.

At noon we met our excursion outside the ship. We were
scheduled for the helicopter tour and glacier walk through the cruise ship.
They use temsco as their tour operator. It was about a 10 minute drive from
town to the office building/airport. Our driver was a college student from BYU.
He made a comment that Alaska bus companies like to higher from his school as
it is hard to find drivers in Alaska that will stay sober.

Once we got to the Temsco building we were shown a brief
safety video and given ice boats and a safety pack. At this point they have
already asked for our weight on a card. Note: the weight they used for us on
the helicopter was about 20 pounds heavier than the weight we listed on our
cards. You are assigned the group you will be in the helicopter with- and in
our case a girl and her friend (not affiliated with the cruise ship) were
placed in different helicopters. Once all the helicopters land the whole group
is back together for the glacier walk.

The helicopter ride was pretty smooth. At one point he
warned us it was windy going over the mountain and it would be a little bumpy.
It was less bumpy than our plane rides out west. When you land on the glacier
you walk out to the Alaskan flag and wait for the other helicopters to land.
Once everyone is there the guides lead you to three or four different places to
see unique parts of the glacier. We saw deep cravaces, a running water stream
which we drank out of, and an underice/underground stream. In total it was
about 20 minutes of glacier walk time and they are willing to take photos of
you and your family. There were about 5 guides with our group and they were
very observant to make sure no one got too close to edges/cracks.

After the excursion ended we went back into town to the Red Dog Saloon- one of Juneaus oldest establishments. It was crowded but we were able to get a table. The story is that they covered the ground with sawdust so that when the miners would pay their bills, if the gold fell out of their pockets it would be harder to see on the floor so they would get extra tips. There was an old man singing bar songs to entertain the crowd- he was hysterical. We stayed for his set and then went back to the ship to get ready for dinner.
Dinner tonight was the Alaskan themed menu. We hadn't seen this menu on other royal cruises before. We had: halibut chower, bay scallop and crab meat gratin, chicken schnitzel, alaskan catch of the day (fresh salmon) and we tried the venison. For dessert: stone fruit something and some kind of pie. (sorry dont remember)
We skipped the production show this everning (it was before dinner) it was some piano playing singer- we caught one or two songs while we were at the champagne gallery event (free drinks). After dinner was the love and marriage game show. It amazes me people still don't know what they are in for when they sign up for this. They did it a little different than we have seen in the past- they aked people to come up and get a raffle ticket if they wanted to be in the show. The groups ranged from 0-5 years of marriage, 5-25 and more than 25 years. Only 3 couples volunteered for the 0-5 years of marrige group. We like it better when its the newest and longest marriage and someone in the middle.

We left the show early and walked around the ship for a bit before heading to bed early. We had an early day in skagway up next.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287152329461311763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2714882880572002824.post-86669857589179790532012-06-06T17:54:00.004-07:002012-06-06T18:23:44.143-07:00Day 4: Icy Strait PointThis morning we opted for room service for breakfast. Usually we find they mess up the order by forgetting something- but they got it right every time this week. In fact, one morning they even called after it was delivered to make sure we had everything we asked for. Lindsay loved the bran (?) muffins on the ship so we wrote in muffins next to the assorted pastries option and they gave us 2 with the breakfast. The coffee comes in a large carafe and the tea comes as hot water. If you order tea you get a plain Lipton bag, if you select herbal tea we were given chamomile.

We had no excursion planned today (we wanted to do the ATV ride but it wasn't being offered) so we were in no rush to get off the ship. Also, its a tender port so we wanted to let the crowds thin out. They tell you it will get crowded from 9:30-11 but it didn't really pick up until 11am. In fact they made an announcement at 10am that there were no lines. At 10am we headed up to the centrum to enter in the Baggo tournament. They had games in the centrum all morning to entertain people while they were waiting in line for the tenders. They also had someone in a whale costume that you could pose with. The whale was very friendly and liked to sneak up on people (side note: Lindsay is afraid of mascots so this was not the most enjoyable part of the day for her). The Baggo tournament had 8 players and we finished in first and second place (Jason won the gold...this time)
After the tournament we went down to deck three to wait in line for the tender boats (they use lifeboats that fit 125 people). The line was snaking around and down one of the halls on deck three, but it didn't take more than 15 minutes to get off the ship. The ride to shore is about 5 minutes. We noticed during the day that when there were sealife spottings in the area, the tenders were slowing down so that the passengers could view.
When we got on shore the first thing we did was stop for some Alaskan king crab. Jason had wanted oysters in Seattle and didn't get them- so we weren't missing the chance to have crab in Alaska. We ordered a half a king crab and it was plenty of food. We walked out onto the dock and that was when we had our first wildlife sighting of the day. There was a sea lion in the water near the shore. We took some pictures and then decided to take the walk out to Hoonah. Hoonah is about a mile and a half away and there is a trail/sidewalks you can take. There is also a shuttle that runs between ISP and Hoonah. Its $8/round trip, one way is $5. If you are able to walk it- we recommend it- as you get a chance to see a lot of wildlife. If there is a sighting the bus will try to stop- but may not always be able to.
Along the walk we saw tons of bald eagles and other birds, lots of waterfalls and pretty scenery. As you get closer to Hoonah there is a very old cemetery on the land side. We found graves from the early 1800s and even a woman from that time that lived to 115 years of age- wow! The walk took us about 40 minutes and that was with stopping for pictures every few feet. Once in Hoonah- there wasn't much to see. There were a few shops, a local bar, and several churches that were closed. Even though there wasn't much there we are glad we walked out there.
On the walk back we were talking about all the great things we saw and how we hadn't yet seen a whale. As if on cue, we hear a giant whoosh (the blow hole of a whale). With camera in hand we started snapping away. The Whale couldn't have been more than 100 yards from shore. We ran with it for a while as it was hard to track when it went underwater.
As we got back into Icy Strait Point we thought we had seen it all. We were wrong. Sitting on the back of a pickup track was a baby bald eagle eating something (perhaps someones lunch) out of the back. The bird, we guess, wasn't more than 2 or 3 years old as it had almost all of its brown cap on its on head. We were able to get less than a car length from this bird without disturbing it. No mom or dad in sight.
We then followed the nature trail on Icy Strait Point. The signs are well marked. The trees are 100 years old (originally cut down and then replanted in 1912) There are a few lakes which i imagine will have mosquitoes later in the season. As you walk through the trail it leads you to the beach where you will see a bunch of islands across the way. If its low tide you can walk out and there will be mussels everywhere. The trail brings you around to the landing zone restaurant where the zip line finishes up. There is also a fire pit, with a fire active (not sure of the significance there). We walked through the shops (the salmon store has samples of salmon jerky- jason says it was ok, lindsay spit it out- and then headed back to the ship)
Back on the ship we once again tried rock climbing but we were told they were closing down due to weather. Instead we played mini golf (lindsay won this time) and went to the under $500 art auction. A note about the art auction: They give you white cards for asking/answering trivia questions during the auctions. You have to bring all of the cards you collect to the last auction and you are entered into a raffle. The winning prize....the $20.00 watch gift set they sell on the ship and a few poster prints of art you would find on a wall in the olive garden. Sail away was around 6pm so Jason went out to the helipad to watch while Lindsay got ready for dinner.
Dinner tonight was strawberry bisque, tomato and mozzarella, scallop risotto, grilled shrimp (which ioan took out of the shell for me..and then brought me more even though i was full with one plate) and lamb shank. As for dessert, we placed our order and then Ioan told us to make some room in the middle as he had a surprise for us. Uh oh! Well, he felt we weren't eating enough on the cruise so he brought us one of every dessert on the menu so we could try them all. As he explained, no pressure to eat them all as they get thrown out anyway so we should have a bite of each of them and enjoy. There was: raspberry panna cotta (lindsays favorite), tiramisu, chocolate mint cake(jasons favorite), angel food cake, warm chocolate cake.
After dinner we headed to the centrum for the 70s party. This was hosted by the CD and his staff. Everybody was in the typical RCCL 70s costumes (village people, bright shirts, wigs). It was a great crowd and very active. They tossed out bracelets and rings- Lindsay was able to snag a yellow bracelet (it said have a nice day and had the royal logo) there was a scheduled afterparty in the starquest but no one was up there.
We ended up in the solarium that night and Jason shared a hot tub with John Lennon who was leaving the ship the next day with his family to board a different ship in Juneau. As we were sailing we past another ship (possibly celebrity) and tried to grab a picture of them.

We weren't in a rush to get up this morning since our excursion was at noon. We had breakfast at the windjammer (side note: We didn't have breakfast at park cafe until day 6, i wish we went sooner as they had breakfast sandwiches that were very good). After breakfast we dressed in our many layers to get ready to go out. We decided not to bring winter coats but rather dress in multiple layers of clothing. As the captain says there is no bad weather only bad clothing. It was around the 50s and cloudy with "liquid sunshine" (rain which is more like mist) every day. Lindsay wore leggings under her jeans, two pairs of socks, a tank top, t-shirt, fleece and long sleeve shirt. And gloves and a hat. Jason wore jeans, one pair of wool socks, two t shirts, a long sleeve shirt and a track jacket. Some days he wore a sweatshirt and we also had windbreakers with us for some of the days.

We had brought with us a map of the downtown ketchikan area which had some walking trails on it. You can find this map online if you google. We followed the trails, it was hilly but not a difficult walk. (we go to the gym 5 days a week so our judgement may be a little bit off) There were sidewalks for just about all of the trail. It takes you through creek street which seemed gimmicky to us (mostly shops and dollys house which is the old brothel) you then walk up the creek, with some good lookout points, through a neighborhood, you have the option of taking the married mans trail or walking down one of the other roads to the totem pole heritage center (you have to pay to get into this but there are a few totem poles outside) We then walked into a few of the touristy shops and bought our typical magnet and other gifts. When we were in Vancouver we picked up the Alaska coupon book. It gives discounts and some free stuff at various stores in each port. You can also collect 9 coins and 9 charms similar to the diamonds international that you would do on a Caribbean cruise. The coins are cheesy but also fun to collect. Note they must show you a piece of jewelry to give you the coin and some of the salespeople are not willing to let you go so quickly. The coupon book is mainly for the "made in china" type of souvenirs but a free coffee mug is always nice. We didn't end up using all our coupons so we left them with the cashier so someone else could benefit.

After shopping we went back to the ship to change into bathing suits and all our clothing layers for we would be going snorkeling! We did the ships excustion Mountain Point Snorkeling which is run by snorkel alaska (they are on facebook if you want to look them up). This excursion was awesome!

When we first saw it we figured this would be cold and potentially dangerour but having read other peoples reviews we felt comfortable. We have snorkeled throughout the carribean in pretty strong currents and in bad weather so we were up for the challenge. You meet on the pier and are guided to a bus that is run by ketchikan not the tour operator. They take you to the office of the snorkeling company and while on the drive over you get your first of several safety briefings. Once at the office you get fit for a wetsuit (they discretely ask for height and weight and give you the appropriate size M-3XL) There were two dressing rooms one for men and one for women. They were heated and they played jimmy buffett to get you in the mood to snorkel. They were very helpful in putting on the wetsuit. One of the girls helped lindsay slide her arms in as she was getting stuck. They also put her boats on her as its difficult to bend once you are in the suit. You are in a full wet suit with boots, hoods, gloves, professional fins and a double spout snorkel. This was the highest quality stuff we have used. You also have the option of weightbelts should you want to free dive or a life float if you are starting to get tired or are not confident in your swimming. make sure you go to the bathroom before you put on your wetsuit. They make sure the goggles are the right size for you and even carry prescription goggles for those with classes (up to a 300 I believe)

The drive from the office to the snorkel site was about 1 minute. The truck with equiptment comes with the bus and you can lock up your valuables there or have left your stuff in the office (also locked). The hike down to the snorkel site was rocky but they made sure to be there to give you a hand and did not go fast down the hill at all. There were 11 of us on this excursion and there were 4 staff members with us. All were PADI certified and 2 were dive masters. They even gave hand signals to us so they can check on us in the water.

Once in the water it took about 2 minutes to be fully warm. You will feel the water trickle in through your feet and fill the wetsuit. Once everyone was in the water and they had again checked all of our equiptment (they helped me secure my goggles better) we followed one of the guides to an area that had lower tide. They also kept a perimeter around us and we were told to look for the black snorkels (staff) and yellow snorkels were fellow cruisers. We saw tons of sealife on the tour. What made it even better is that they would dive down and pick up the creatures we could see. They brought to the surface: sea urchin, sea stars, starfish, sea cucumbers, crab and kelp. They would give a little talk about the sealife as they passed it around so that everyone could hold. There was no fighting to be able to hold and touch the sealife. As the tour continued we had the option of taking the inner passage which was calmer or the outer passage which was better for freedivers. They stayed with you so you wouldn't lose the group. At one point a carnival cruise ship was leaving the port and sailed right past us. We also saw bald eagles flying over our snorkel site. Overall we spent about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes in the water which was plenty of time.

Once we got out and climbed back up the hill the best surprise of the day- a tub of hot water to pour down our wetsuit. That warmed me up fast! We drove back to the office and were instructed on how to get out of the wetsuit (peel it like a banana) They told us to leave everything on the ground- we were on vacation and they were there to work. They had just installed outdoor showers so we were able to rinse off as well. Once we changed they had hot tea, hot cocoa and water for us and a little gift shop of hats, tshirts and sweatshirts. They all came on the bus to say goodbye to us.Then a busdriver took us back to the ship and we were back 15 minutes before all aboard. I can't say enough how great this tour was. Besides the experience which was amazing the staff was so professional, helpful and knowledgable. The excursion was run very well.

Once back on the ship we played who in the world am i trivia- very tough- and then got ready for dinner. We walked around the shops a bit tonight and went to the headliner show (revolution- a beatles tribute band, not as good as beatlemania which we saw on the adventure) We had the welcome back party this night as well. They served champagne, wine, rum punch and maybe screwdrivers. They had out chocolate covered strawberries and some other dessert petie fores. They had some warm apps (chicken wings, spring rolls, some beef thing and fried tofu perhaps) and the typical canapes they pass around (shrimp with cucumber, egg on toast with caviar, salami on toast and brie on toast). As the captain was speaking two whales appeared on our starboard side and he lost everyones attention. He did introduce the guests with the most sailings on RCCL they had been on our ship since March.
Dinner tonight: Lindsay had the chicken soup, asparagus and brie tart, BBB (creme brulee). Jason had crab and shrimp salad ( i think), some type of beef maybe the beef shoulder filet, ice cream and a cheese plate. Our waitor felt we needed fruit with the cheese, so he brought us one of those as well. did i mention we love Ioan even though it was way too much food. At this point I will also give a shout out to his assistant Ivan who was also great. He made sure I had a savory bite every night and took out the sweet n low for my iced tea before I even asked for one.
That night Kelly had a tribute to billy joel in the schooner bar so we stopped by there for a little while and then to the solarium for some milk and cards (we bring skip bo with us on every trip)

Tip of the day: Go on the snorkeling excursion!
The compass was full of activities to choose from. We had windjammer breakfast, which wasn't too crowded. We found the best place to sit was at the tables near the Boardwalk DogHouse. There was a coffee station open out there and very few people would sit there- we always found window seating.

After breakfast we went to progressive trivia. We were a little early so we played a quick game of pool. The self-leveling tables really do work!

Progressive trivia was run differently than we had seen in the past. You were given a booklet (similar to the majority rules game show) and you would bring up your answer after each question and the answer would be revealed after each question. Questions were worth anywhere from 1-5 points, and Darren did stump everyone on one question.

Next up was our cruise critic meet and mingle. We did not have a very active board. Many were B2Bers so perhaps they were active on the other week. About 15 people showed up to the party. Paul, the CD, was the host and there were two other staff members there. He made it very clear that he reads the message boards (Hi Paul). They auctioned off a RCCL tote bag and three giftwrapped swag bags. Well, we never win anything and we won both the tote bag and one of the giftwrapped bags. It had a coffee mug, luggage tags, magnets, keychains and a pen. They gave everyone a "free gift" which is the same notepad/pen thing that can be worn around your neck that they have been giving away for a while. They had fruit punch and something else to drink and canapes to eat. We only stayed about 15 minutes as we had other activites we wanted to do.
From there we went to the horseracing being held in the Centrum. This is a fundraiser for Make a wish (there were 2 make a wish families sailing on our cruise). The horse racing is three races that each have 6 horses and you make real bets with your sea pass card. (2 dollars for the first two races, 5 dollars for the last race). This activity is run by the CD who serves as the announcer. He rolls three dice and each time the number appears that horse moves a space. People seemed to get very into it. Lindsay was the jockey for horse #2, the Australian horse. Race 1 she came in last, but she was very close in races 2 and 3 and came in second on both of those.

After horseracing we went to the champagne art auction (which is in starquest/viking crown lounge). There were several trays of champagne sitting out compared to the usual situation where they are passed out. The art ranged from 500- 7,000 dollars. There was not much bidding all week. The auctioner was not very entertaining or informative. He only spoke about one or two artists giving the history behind their paintings. Of course as this was a RCCL ship there were plenty of Romero Britto's on display. Also they had a special night just for Thomas Kinkade later in the week. This was the first of 3 art auctions. There were also events in the art gallery on many nights. There were some RCCL swag giveaways and of course the piece of free art. The art was bigger this time, which we didn't like as it made it difficult to travel home with. We folded ours up. Again the rock climbing wall was closed.

We did some more stuff around the ship and then got ready as tonight was formal night and the captains reception. At the captains reception they once again had free champagne. The captain, who is very funny, spoke for a few minutes and then the top staff introduced themselves. We always find it awkward walking through the line of staff on both sides as you enter the lounge. The event was held in the Colony Club.

After this was dinner in the Main dining room. Lindsay had the strawberry bisque, shrimp ravioli and chocolate souffle. Jason had the bay scallop gratin or something like that, the seafood kabob and the cheesecake.

After dinner we took formal portraits- we did this twice during the week but never found any we liked. The lines were always very long and the photographers would use the same three poses. Tonight was also the first production show- the piano man- a tribute to billy joel, elton john and the like. We stayed- but we didn't go back to another production show. Just wasn't for us. You either love them or you don't.

We ended the night with some tea and milk from the solarium/park cafe. At night the park cafe has all the sandwhiches and desserts from the day but the salad bar (which is a bagel bar at breakfast) turns into make your own pizza. They also have pizza at the park cafe which is usually only at windjammer during lunch.

The solarium wasn't crowded at night, quiet enough that you could hear the piped in animal noises and the lights are turned down to add extra ambiance. it was Jason's favorite spot at night. A bonus on RCCL compared to Carnival is that the hot tubs and pools are open 24 hours.

Tip of the day: If you like champagne, there is plenty flowing today! Grab a glass on your way out of the captains reception and bring it to dinner!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287152329461311763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2714882880572002824.post-40762486170055982942012-06-04T18:00:00.000-07:002012-06-04T18:00:01.717-07:00Day 1 of the CruiseNormally a 6 am wake up call is something one would be very upset with while on vacation...This was not the case. We woke up like children getting news they were going to Disneyworld as this was our embarkation day. We had a journey ahead of us with multiple lines, customs, and further packing. We checked out from the hotel and were taken to the Amtrak station before 7 am. We were told in other cruise boards and the amtrak website that this train fills up (and it does). Additional information you do not hear about are the very diorganized fashion of boarding.
You enter the Amtrak building and are put in a line similar to checking in at an airport without the familiar touching and metal detection. Your bags are weighed in which you really do need to check like you would at the airport; complete with the same 50 weight limit per bag. You can go over if you want to pay. I do not recall if there was a major limitation to the amount of bags you check, just the amount they weigh each. Once you are done with that you go to a seating area similar to a gate. They were under new construction so check if you will be doing this soon. Although you will be able to grab coffee and breakfast on the train, it is a limited menu. Get your last cup of coffee before entering the train. The seating is confirmed but you are assigned an actual seat number once they are almost ready to board. The train is mostly 2X2 so every seat is more or less a window seat. If you make nice with the conductor prior to boarding I would ask for the left side of the train as it is more scenic on the way up to vancouver. The seats are roomy, comfy, and do have overhead areas for storing smaller bags. The "bar car" has a limited menu of snacks, coffee, drinks, and breakfast items which were all prepared by microwave. It was not a bad deal and we enjoyed our breakfast like we would on any normal commute day via a gas station or 7-11.
The train ride was about 3 hours and change. There are a few brief stops on the way up so if the seat next to you is open, it probably will not be by the end of the trip. The scenery is beautiful with the sea to your left and the terrain on your right. We saw some bald eagles for the first time which the friendly conductor points out via the PA system.

HINT OF THE MORNING- memorize the Canadian National Anthem and prepare to sing it for a bonus. This is an actual serious tip. Once you get to Vancouver they will hand you the usual customs form. They will only allow 1 car to get off at a time. Following those cars that are considered business class they will literally ask for volunteers to sing O ' Canada over the public announcement speakers. If someone from your car does this, you get off first, which means you go through customs first, and technically get to the ship first. No one from our car did this and we began to panic because it was now getting close to 12:15 by the time we were allowed off the train. They line up your bags along a fence and you easily pick them up and get into line for customs. As my blood pressure rose up fearing we would miss out on the early cruise fun and possibly lose out on sail away events it quickly calmed. We were through customs and into a cab within tweny minutes of getting off the train. At the port within thirty. I think the cab cost us about 8 dollars or so. He took American money so no worries.
We pulled up to the port, dropped off our bags to a friendly porter who was shocked when I handed him a tip ( usually they stand there until you give them one) and got into line. This was the fastest check in process we have ever experienced. They were friendly and fast which is perfect. We were on the ship within thirty minutes from the time we dropped our bags, to check in, customs again (you go through Canadian and then American before getting on the ship as you will not go through customs again in Seward(weird). More to follow regarding sail away. But all in all we were on the ship by 1:15 if I remember correctly so 1 hour from getting off the train from being on the last car to get off so do not worry.

When we checked in we were given only one WOW card which we didn't realize at first was a mistake. Then when we got our seapass cards we noticed that Lindsays C&A status was not on the card. We went to guest relations right away and they were able to look it up and give us a coupon book. However, they could not give us a second WOW card as those are only given out at the pier (or so they say).

After that was settled we went to begin our cruise ship ritual, some opt for a DOD, some opt for the honey stung chicken for us its the hot tub. Once we got on the ship we grabbed some lounge chairs, change into our bathing suits that we keep packed in our carry on and get into the hot tub as soon as we can. The pools were also suprisingly warm, not sure if they are heated, but we think they were as they were the warmest we have had. This goes for the solarium and the outside pool deck pool. We had lunch at the Park Cafe, which is where we had lunch almost every day and walked around the ship for a little bit. At around 3:00 we stopped at our cabin and our bags were already waiting for us and we met our room steward who we found annoying throughout the week. (every day around 7 oclock she would knock on our door to see if she could make up our room. We had late seating dinner and we were always in there getting dressed, you would think by the third night she would have figured this out, but this continued all week long) Muster drill was at 3:45 and then we went up for sailaway. Typical sailaway party with very few participants dancing most people were around the outer decks snapping pictures of the scenery. We set sail around 4:30.
We went to the rock climbing wall after sailaway but it was closed. Seemed to be the theme of the cruise, we tried three different times and it was always closed due to wind or rain. A few lucky people did get to climb the wall this week, but not many.

We went to the welcome aboard show-nothing to write home about- our CD was Paul Rudder and the activities manager was darren (who was also the Activities manager when we were on the enchantment in january) Dinner the first night was good. It was our first night with Ioan and Ivan who were the best dining team we have had. We were at a table for 2, #491, located at the bottom of the stairs. Lindsay had ceasar salad and the fish, Jason had the vidalia onion tart and prime rib. We skipped dessert the first night, and Ioan thought something was wrong. Nope- just not very hungry. All week they thought we didnt like the food when we wouldn't clear our plates- I guess american cruises really do have the reputation of being glutenous.
We headed back to the market but it was still early. The market itself does not appear to open until around ten (the touristy part at least). Between the hours of nine and ten it became very crowded as the stores opened up. We entered by the famous pig. You will see it near the flying fish area.

It is where most people will be standing around staring at the fish mongers. The pig is a bronze life-size statue with a story behind it which I cannot recall. The pig itself is a piggy bank collecting money for seattle area charities. The fish begin to fly about every ten minutes and they are very entertaining. They will pose with you and your family for pictures and do not push their tip jar on you. They sell all sorts of shirts and sweatshirts at their market as well as whole fish, crab, and everything in between.
The stores are located underneath the main market area (across the street is where you will find many of the cafes) we stopped at the magic shop which was not impressive. Overall it felt very similar to the inner harbor (baltimore) and faneuil hall (boston). We were done shopping within an hour and didn't find anything to buy. After looking around we went in search of the gum wall in post alley. Jason found it disgusting, lindsay thought it was awesome. It seems to have grown in recent years from the stories we have heard. If you are trying to find it, any of the local salespeople will be able to help but it is near the market theater.

After the gum wall we headed to the waterfront to the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop. It was very crowded. It's definately walkable, as you don't have to climb up any of the big hills, but you do need to go down the hill to get to the piers. It was maybe a half a mile and you will pass 6 or 7 or 10 coffee shops on your way. The curiosity shop had a lot of oddities hanging from the ceiling and museum pieces not for sale. Definately worth visiting and won't take you more than 20 minutes to walk through. Its at pier 54.

From there we stopped at Ivars for chowder. At this location they had a sit down restaurant and a boardwalk style counter where you could order and sit on the patio or heated patio sections, both of which were on the harbor. We shared a cup of New England clam Chowder which was quite good. We are from the Northeast and found this to be one of the best chowders we have had.

Next we walked to Pioneer square and occidental park. If it werent for the map I had I wouldn't have known I was there. They are both very small and unremarkable. In Pioneer square you will find a totem pole, the cities oldest restaurant (merchants cafe) and a Docs saloon which is the starting point for the underground tour. We skipped that, have to leave something for next visit. Its not worth going for the totem pole if you are headed to alaska. Occidental park was more of a gravel area with two sculptures. We stopped for some pictures and then kept on our walking tour.

From there we went to the gold rush museum (free) and good for kids and a way to get excited about the upcoming alaska trip (we were scheduled to go on the yukon train which follows the gold rush trail of 1898. There was a school field trip there when we arrived and the students seemed to be enjoying themselves. It is run by the park ranger service
Across the street was zeitgeist coffee where we stopped to get a cup before our next adventure. We took the bus (124) out to the museum of flight. It was 2.25 per person on the way down and 2.50 on the way back since it was rush hour. There were a ton of bus stops in the area and we just had to wait to find our number. On the way down we paid as we exited the bus, on the way back to downtown we paid as we got on. Not sure how the system works in Seattle, but we did as we were told. The bus was crowded but we were able to find seats. It took about 40 minutes to get down there and the museum is directly on the bus line, you just need to walk across the street.

There are two flight museums in Seattle, one to the north and one to the south. This was the Museum of Flight (the one in the south). The museum had exhibits for WWI and WWII planes, space flight, and modern aircraft. They also had an airfield where you can board a former air force one (from JFK) and the concorde (which was closed the day we were there). There are also several other large aircraft you can walk up to and under. The coolest part was the third floor observatory which looks out onto the very active runway. They have the live airtraffic controllers for boeing airfield being played in the room. We also did the flight simulator ride. Note: you must have 2 people to be able to ride this ride. Lindsay couldn't chicken out. Lindsay doesn't like rollercoasters but she wanted Jason to get the experience so she went for the ride. It wasn't that bad- its all self controlled so you don't have to do the 360 degree turns if you don't want to. We have been to the air and space museum in DC and Jason thought this was better. It was much more hands on.
We spent about 3 hours in the museum and then it was time to hit the gift shop and catch our bus back to downtown. We took Bus 124 back up but this time got off at Safeco field as we were going to the mariners game tonight. We got there at 5 oclock and they let us in to a holding area which overlooks the visitors bullpen. You could watch the mariners BP and CJ Wilson was getting his off day work in so we got some great shots of that. At 5:10 they opened the real gates and you had access to the whole stadium. Very different than Yankee stadium where you need tickets for the section to get behind the plate during BP. We walked the stadium, checked out their hall of fame and decided we are glad we are yankee fans (yes, i know, typical yankee fan attitude) I will say it was nice to pay less than what we paid for one opening day ticket(second to last row in the stadium) for two tickets, second row at safeco field. The Mariners lost, but we only stayed till the 7th as it was cold and we had to be up early for the train in the morning.

After the game we took the light rail back up to our hotel. Again maybe someone from seattle can help explain this but we bought our ticket at the station and no one ever collected it, it didn't open doors for me, and basically I have no idea why I needed it. The same thing happened when we used the light rail from the airport. How does it work out here? We stopped for some late night food at PF chengs (this is now more times than i have been to the one at home) and chatted with our bartender friend once again. We found there was not much to do at night in this city and things seemed to close early at least in the area we were in. We did not go to Belltown or pioneer square at night. Several people warned us we wouldn't want to walk around PS at night.

If you only have the two days eat street food, don't waste time sitting at a restaurant.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287152329461311763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2714882880572002824.post-47256041561420554892012-06-03T17:21:00.001-07:002012-06-04T16:36:59.607-07:00Seattle Day 1 and 2We left NewJersey Tuesday morning and flew out of Philadelphia to Seattle. When originally booking the cruise (which sailed out of Vancouver) we looked at flights to both Seattle and Vancouver. Well, it was several hundred dollars cheaper to fly into Seattle, so we took that money and made a pre-cruise vacation out of it in Seattle.

Our flight stopped in Minneapolis and then we arrived in Seattle at 8pm. From the airport we took the Seattle light rail (walk through the airport parking lot) almost directly to our hotel. We used priceline and the winning bid got us the Mayflower Park Hotel (4 star seattle downtown) The hotel was in a great location for all the walking we planned to do. By the time we got to the hotel (around 10pm) not many restaurants were still open. We walked around for a little bit and ended up at the PF Changs around the corner from the hotel. (Note there are many homeless people in the area and they will talk to you) They had a great late night happy hour ( a lot of seattle restaurants have happy hour from 3-6 and again 10-close) and we talked to many locals to get tips of what we shouldn't miss in our limited stay in the city. The bartender (Jason) was very helpful. We asked about local beers and he was more than willing to let us sample all of them.
(picture is bedlam coffee)

Still on east coast time we woke up pretty early the next day and headed out towards the Seattle Center. We started by walking north to the Olympic Sculpture Park. We stopped at a coffeeshop and picked up two lattes (bedlam coffee, our best lattes of the trip) and then grabbed a scone from macrina bakery a few blocks north for breakfast. We knew the museums didn't open for a few hours so we took some time walking through the sculpture park and the other nearby park. One tip, make sure you go to the bathroom before leaving your hotel- it was very difficult to find a public restroom early that morning.

After the Olympic Sculpture park we walked to Seattle Center where we went to the EMP museum which opened at 10. You can buy your tickets online ahead of time at a discounted price. This museum was a lot of fun- and I am not even a huge music fan. My husband, who basically grew up with Nirvana and is a drummer absolutely lover it. The downstairs areas have a room of quitars, tributes to nirvana, jimi hendrix and ac/dc and a bunch of other musical stuff. The upstairs area also has "jam rooms" where you can play instruments, and even purchase your own recordings. Attached is the science fiction museum which is small but has a cool tribute to horror films tucked in the back.
After the EMP it was lunch time so we walked through the seattle center area to see the fountain and then up to sushiland for lunch. At sushiland you sit at the counter and plates of sushi go by on a conveyor belt- just pick what you want. Each plate is a different color that corresponds to the price (ie orange plates one dollar, green plates $1.50) no plates cost more than 3 dollars. We were able to have lunch for 7 dollars.
After lunch we went back to Seattle center and went to the Pacific Science Center. I was really looking forward to some of the outdoor exhibits such as the bicycle and hampster wheel, but both were closed due to cold weather. If you have been to some of the major science centers (NY, DC, Philly, even NJ's liberty science center) don't waste your time here. The body works exhibit is almost identical to franklin institute. The one nice part was the butterfly garden was included in admission and not an extra charge.
We walked back to the hotel from here, first stopping for another latte...can't have enough caffeine when in Seattle. Our hotel had a wine tasting that night in the restaurant (Andaluca) except it was more of a please drink free wine for one hour instead of a true tasting. Based on a recommendation from the bartneder the night before we ate dinner at the TapHouse which had a wall of beers on tap (over 90)

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 12.5pt;">A little bit about us. We are Jason and Lindsay...and we are
obsessed with cruising. We try to go on two or three cruises a year- and don't
like not having a cruise booked at all times. We both grew up in New Jersey and
are living here now. We will both turn 30 this year and have decided to set a
goal of 80 cruises (each) by the time we turn 80 years old. We are on our way
to that goal, Lindsay has been on 10 and Jason has been on 8...evenly split
between Carnival, Celebrity and Royal Carribean (and a one nighter on
Norwegian). We plan to start this blog with a review of our recent Alaska
cruise and then we will work backwards through our other cruises (bahamas,
eastern/western/southern carribean, canada, bermuda...)

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 12.5pt;">More about us...we have been married since 2010. We both teach
at the college level so we travel on college breaks in May and January. Prior
to meeting each other Jason had never been on a cruise. He had the normal
cruise virgin fears of seasickness, claustrophobia, extra hidden costs and that
there would be nothing to do; yet ever since Lindsay convinced him to try it
out he hasn't looked back. Lindsay took her first cruise with her family when
she was in highschool, but it had been several years since she had been on a
ship when she first met Jason. We spent our honeymoon on a cruise, we got
engaged on a cruise and we will hopefully one day retire on a cruise ship. In
the last three years we have been on 7 cruises together, one of which was a
back to back for our honeymoon. Our next cruise is scheduled for August when we
go back up to Canada on the Glory.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287152329461311763noreply@blogger.com0
